Nitrous Sedation (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous Sedation at Horizons Dental Care

Dental anxiety is very common. For some patients, it can make even routine dental care feel stressful. At Horizons Dental Care, we offer nitrous sedation in Ottawa, often called laughing gas, as a comfort option for eligible patients. It can help both children and adults feel more relaxed during treatment while remaining awake and responsive.

What Is Nitrous Sedation?

Nitrous oxide is a safe and widely used sedation option in dentistry. It is administered through a small mask placed gently over the nose.

Patients breathe normally while receiving a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen.

Within a few minutes, many patients begin to feel:

  • Calmer
  • Lighter
  • Less focused on the dental procedure

The dentist monitors the patient throughout the entire appointment to ensure comfort and safety. The patient remains awake and able to communicate with the dental team at all times.

How Long Does It Take to Wear Off?

One of the advantages of nitrous sedation is how quickly it wears off. Once the procedure is finished, the nitrous is stopped and the patient breathes oxygen for a few minutes. Most patients feel back to normal very quickly afterward.

Nitrous Sedation for Children

Nitrous sedation can be particularly helpful for children who feel nervous at the dentist. It can help make the experience feel calmer and more manageable, allowing children to remain relaxed while still being awake and responsive. Our team takes time to explain everything in a friendly and reassuring way so children feel comfortable during their visit.

When Is Nitrous Sedation Used?

Nitrous sedation may be recommended for patients who:

  • Feel anxious about dental visits

  • Have a strong gag reflex

  • Feel nervous about certain procedures

  • Have had difficulty relaxing during dental care in the past

Not every patient is a candidate, and we always review medical history before recommending it.

Sedation Options for Surgical Procedures

For some surgical procedures, such as certain implant cases, we may also work with dentists and dental teams licensed to provide IV sedation, when clinically appropriate. If sedation may benefit your treatment, we will explain the available options and help determine what is suitable for you.
